RFIs have over the years become an extremely overused multi-purpose document that the contractor uses to initiate many situations. Requests for Information started out many years ago as a means to get questions answered and clarifications of the contract documents. Today in construction an RFI not only seeks answers but opens the delay/impact issue, and often serves as the initial notification document. Therefore, the RFI document must be clear and differentiate between a basic question and notification of impact and urgency.
Due to this expanded use of RFIs they must be carefully crafted to prroperly inform the recicient of urgency, effect on work, schedule impacts, and possible solutions/work-arounds that can mitigate the affects. If you are an Expedition Professional user, add needed custom fields and create proper forms.
Consider printing urgent RFIs on light red peper, or adding a symbol that cannot be missed, or using a special impact document name. It is important to make the recipient spot and treat this RFI with and accelerated processing.
Always properly reference the RFI and attach copies of any referenced documents, calculations, or photos. DO NOT MAKE THE REVIEWER GUESS OR SEARCH.
